Who Knows Your IFTA Data?

This is a question that every truck driver, owner-operator, or person looking to expand their small fleet should be ready to answer. Before we jump into the main subject of this article, we should do a quick recap of what IFTA is because some people may not be familiar with this topic.

What is IFTA? (Quick Review)

IFTA stands for the International Fuel Tax Agreement. In short, IFTA needed to be made so that taxing all vehicle fuel for a truck driver who travels between different states can be more efficient and simple. Instead of using each state’s different way of taxing fuel, which wasted time and was very expensive, IFTA was enforced. The system is called the “pay now or pay later.”

Why do we ask who has access to your IFTA data?

It’s worth thinking about because “the free IFTA program I saw online” is a common response. Let’s talk about it for a minute.

When you use a “free” online service, you frequently provide the service provider with a great deal of information. Data on your trips, hints about your routes, how long you stayed in each location, how much you spent on gas, and so much more… But that’s not even half of it.

This company now has your email address. Nowadays, you can buy almost any email list you want. If it wasn’t for that, why do we get so much spam? You are statistically more inclined to open an email than to click on a link for more information on a website. As a result, providing your email address is extremely beneficial to them.

Dangers of accepting cookies:

You may have noticed that websites now request permission to place cookies on your computer since the European Union passed the GBPR (General Data Protection Regulation). Cookies are not what you think they are. They are records of where we’ve been on our computers. Those are some interesting facts about you. Every website you went to, things you like, basically everything about you. This is supposed to improve your experience on the internet but it can take passwords and private information.

Bottom Line:

The presumably free IFTA computing programs are gathering a significant amount of information about you and your trucking company. Do you truly intend to give it to them? Do you feel comfortable giving them access to your IFTA data?  If this concerns you, it may be best to avoid relying on them. Be careful what website to trust.
