Driver pay has been on a wild ride in the past four years. It steadily increased during the pandemic, peaked in 2023, and then dropped sharply as market conditions shifted. These changes have made it hard for both companies and drivers to adjust.
In this article, we’ll break down the key trends, explain what they mean for you, and help you prepare for the future.
Why Driver Pay Trends Matter for Companies and Drivers
Understanding driver pay trends is important for both trucking companies and drivers. For companies, knowing how and why pay rates have changed helps control costs. For drivers, understanding what’s causing changes in your pay can help ease the worry and uncertainty you feel about lower wages.
The Truck Driver Pay Index provides useful insights into these trends based on real data from our clients. While this data covers only a portion of the industry, it still offers a good look at the overall trends.
Let’s take a look.
Based on data from Superior Trucking Payroll Service clients, this graph shows the driver pay trend from 2020 to mid-2024.

Truck Driver Pay Trends from 2020 to 2024: A Roller Coaster of Wages
The past four years have seen dramatic changes in truck driver pay. Here’s a snapshot of what happened:
Driver pay steadily increased due to a surge in demand for drivers and freight during the pandemic.
Driver pay peaked as companies competed to attract and retain drivers, offering higher wages and bonuses.
Pay rates began to fall as freight rates dropped, and many trucking companies could no longer sustain the higher wages.
The rise and fall in driver pay has made things difficult for both companies and drivers, leaving many to deal with a volatile market. However, understanding these shifts is key to making better decisions moving forward.
Using the Truck Driver Pay Index to Make Better Decisions About Pay Trends
Over the past four years, driver pay has changed a lot. These changes were caused by high demand during the pandemic, a drop in freight rates, and market shifts in 2023. These shifts created both opportunities and challenges for trucking companies and drivers, affecting how pay works in the industry.
Pay rates have leveled off now, but they are still lower than they were in early 2023. Companies are trying to cut costs, and drivers are dealing with more competition for the highest-paying jobs. The data we’ve gathered helps companies and drivers understand these trends and deal with the current market.
Pay rates could rise again as freight rates improve, but staying informed about market changes will be important for making smart choices. By continuing to track these changes, we aim to help you manage cash flow and give drivers the information they need to plan for the future.
